Your Best Policy Experts Probably Already Work for You

Last week, I was talking with two frontline staff members from an organization working to end homelessness, who both started the conversation the same way.
They told me they weren’t policy experts. That they wouldn’t know what to say to a lawmaker. That advocacy wasn’t really their thing.
And then they spent the next 40 minutes explaining, in clear and concrete terms, exactly how housing policy plays out in real life.
I see this all the time. The people closest to the work often don’t see themselves as advocates, even though they’re sitting on the kind of insight policymakers actually need.
This post is about why the gap exists and what nonprofit leaders can do differently to engage staff to achieve stronger, more grounded advocacy.
